Trend Watch: Velvet Empire

I first started noticing this trend last winter, but lately it’s been everywhere – and rendered in many different ways. I’m talking about velvet, which last had a major fashion moment in the 1990s. Today I’m seeing crushed velvet, felted velvet, and of course, regular, plush velvet. While I’m still dubious about velvet’s breathability as an everyday fabric, I have to admit that it’s a fun way to luxe up your wardrobe. Today I’m highlighting a bunch of velvet pieces that may also make great gift (or wish list) items!

From L to R, from the top

YACUN Women’s Velvet Short Bomber Jacket Coat – $22.99 @ Amazon.ca: Amazon is a treasure trove for velvet everything, including this double-trendy jacket that layers beautifully.

Gem Velvet Backpack – $69 @ Simon’sIf any fashion accessory needs dressing up, it’s your backpack. This chic little bag comes in three jewel tones.

Skinnydip Velvet Pencil Set – $12 @ Urban OutfittersYeah, even school supplies are getting velvety. This fun set also includes an eraser – and everything is stamped with messages like ‘Killin It’ or ‘Yasss Queen’

Gema Slides – $110 @ Steve MaddenVelvet shoes – particularly 70s-inspired platforms and boots – are a big thing right now. I like these skater-y slides, to edge up this otherwise femme fabric.

Velvet Miniaudiere – $49 @ Town ShoesYou can’t go wrong pairing velvet with eveningwear; nab this timeless clutch in four classic hues like ruby red and sapphire blue.

Velvet Belt – $11.50 @ ArdeneWant to dip your toe in this trend? Opt for a simple accessory like a belt, to add a little femininity to your look.

Trina Turk Velveteen One-Piece Swimsuit – $224 @ Hudson’s Bay: This is one velvet trend that’s totally unexpected, but many swimwear brands launched velvet suits this past summer. Worried about getting it wet? Save it for poolside lounging then.

TOPMAN Velveteen Joggers – $65 @ Hudson’s BayAnother big shift in the velvet trend is the fact some pieces are being released for men. This loungewear-style pant is a perfect way for him take advantage of this plush material without fretting about standing out on the street.

Velvet Choker – $4.90 @ Forever 21Another 90s trend? Chokers. Pair ’em together with this super cheap-chic accessory.

Chelsea28 Pleated Velvet Skirt – $61.48 @ NordstromI love velvet rendered in notice-me hues, like this fall-ready mustard skirt that also captures another huge trend this year: the pleated midi.

Black Velvet Fur Pom Hat – $29.99 USD @ Velvet CaviarTop off your look with a velvet ball cap, coming in three dark hues. Don’t love the fur pom pom? It detaches!

Twik Crushed Velvet Tee – $25 @ Simon’s: If you want to go all-in on the velvet look, Simon’s is the the place to shop. This crushed velvet top comes in four colours – with skirts to coordinate with or wear as separates.
