Play With Your Food
Today’s gifts are all about having fun with your food…not in the sense of designing a face out of peas and potatoes on our plate, but more along the general idea of party food ideas (think of it as the edible equivalent to fun party games like Cranium or Apples 2 Apples). And yes, there is a giveaway today…so pay attention
Hamilton Beach 8-Person Raclette Grill – $79.99 @ Sears
This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Raclette, but I will happily take any opportunity to remind you of its awesomeness. For those not in the know, a raclette is a European tradition that has made its way over to North America in the last few years – and it’s perfect for partying. The gist of the experience is to fill a small tray with your choice of ingredients from the host’s selection – everything from proscuitto and potatoes to veggies and mushrooms are fair game. Then, you top it off with a paper-thin slice of raclette cheese and let it slowly roast on the lower level of the grill. Meanwhile, over glasses of wine, you can grill veggie kabobs or shellfish for an on-the-go nibble that’ll also pair nicely with your raclette serving. The small portion sizes make this a great all-nighter activity, and is equally fun for chi-chi twentysomethings and empty-nesting retirees alike.
Zoku Chocolate Station – $25 @ Cookworks
Again, Zoku is not something I haven’t written about, but since landing with an icy splash last summer, the Zoku brand has since expanded to fun accessories and kits to make the (near) insta-popsicle phenomenon that much more enjoyable. I particularly like this little kit because it has potential for grown-up and adult parties alike. After making your tasty treat, pop your bar into the chocolate station for easy, even coating, then quickly dip it or sprinkle it with your favourite accouterments for a deluxe gourmet ice cream experience. This is a cute idea if you’re hosting a bridal or baby shower this summer and want to let everyone get a little interactive despite the heat.
Topchips Microwave Potato Chip Maker – $30 for two trays @ Golda’s Kitchen
Save money, save your waistline, and have fun while doing it with these nifty potato chip crispers from Topchips. Simply slice and place on the trays (which can be stacked 3 high if you’ve got a crowd to feed), throw into the microwave, and minutes later you’ll have oil-free, tasty-as-can-be chips. If you’ve got a teenage daughter, sister, or niece in your midst, consider gifting her with a set of these for her next slumber party to give the kids something active to do before vegging out in front of the TV. Another fun idea? Bring your friends over for a beer and chip sampling – grab a dozen local and imported brews and taste test them with a variety of chips you concoct.
President’s Choice S’mores & Cupcake Kits @ Loblaws
It wasn’t that long ago when President’s Choice was the first brand to launch a S’mores kit, which has now become a ubiquitous fixture on grocery and drugstore shelves around the country it seems. If you’re looking for the original thing though, you can’t really go wrong with this trunk-friendly box that makes a perfect accompaniment on your next camping trek. Packed with enough to make 24 S’mores via gooey marshmallows, melty chocolate, and crisp honey graham crackers, this is a super cost-effective choice that’ll put smiles on everyone’s faces. Stuck indoors on a rainy weekend? Check out the new cutesy cupcake kit, with a basic-yet-tasty batter, frosting, and sprinkles, all just waiting for you to customize it with a splash of food colouring, flavouring, or other fun toppings.
Velata Fondue Warmer & Chocolate Packs – $8 – $48
Of course, a party foods post wouldn’t be complete without a nod to fondue, which has been given new life with these sensational electric fondue warmers from Velata. If you’ve ever suffered the woes of scorched chocolate, you will absolutely love this handy gadget that allows you to temperature control your sweet chocolatey goodness with the turn of a dial, which powers a light bulb optimized to keep your sweet treat at that perfect mix of melted and warm but not burnt and hot. Available in three different styles and tons of different colours, this is a fun way to bring that chocolate fountain feel to your afternoon brunch or special occasion shower. To make things ridiculously easy for you, Velata also sells chocolate packs in four scrumptious flavours – Dark, Milk, White, and Caramel – serve up one on its own, or drizzle some white or caramel on one of the classic chocolates for an artful presentation.
Let’s hone in on Velata for another moment here. Now that I’ve told you what it is, I’m sure you’re coveting one for yourself (or a lucky person on your shopping list, naturally). You can buy all Velata products from a registered seller in your neighbourhood by hosting a yummy in your tummy Velata fondue party. And here’s one last nifty idea – if you buy one for a friend or family member as a gift, you then have a built-in hostess gift going forward, at just $8 a pop.
