Fanning the Flames

BBQ & grilling gifts get a lot of attention in June for two pretty obvious reasons. One, it’s almost summer, aka peak grilling season. Two, the BBQ has long been the primary culinary domain of men, and with Father’s Day looming, any grilling god would love to have some new pieces to perk up his Q space. With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a *bunch* of great grilling gift ideas.

Chicken Leg Griller & Jalapeno RoasterNordic Ware Chicken Leg Griller & Jalapeno Roaster – $25
If you’re cooking for plenty, this handy grilling tool may be a godsend. Perfect for even cooking of chicken drumsticks, stuffed jalapenos, or even tortilla roll-ups, this handy holder can stash up to 17 pieces of food. It’s particularly useful for chicken if you’re one to slather on the sauce and baste – you won’t believe how simple it is to keep your pieces plump and juicy. Bonus feature? It also works just fine in the oven when you’re cooking in chillier weather. You can pick it up at Caynes, Peavey in-store locations or through the Nordic Ware website (linked above).

MeatrakeMeatrake – $20
If you crave a smoky shredded sandwich in the summertime, you’re not alone. Whether you slow roast a chicken on the rotisserie or let a pork shoulder simmer in BBQ sauce all day in a slow cooker, the final step in making a simple-yet-savoury sandwich is the pulling process. Meatrake has created a rather self-explanatory product that makes the process of shredding your meat absolutely simple, with an easy-grip handle and ergonomic design. These smart tools are actually used by BBQ competitors and top chefs alike, so dad can count himself amongst the pros with a set of Meatrakes in his hand. For the record, you can buy them online (with $10 shipping), however they’re also available in Canada at Alberta’s ACME Meat Market & Ontario Gas BBQ.

Rob Rainford Born To GrillRob Rainford’s Born To Grill – $29.95 (list)
I find this cookbook particularly awesome for two reasons. One, it’s written by a Canadian chef (who was born in Jamaica) – which means a lot. I find cookbooks by Canadian authors have little nuances from American ones, things that are more culturally in-tune. For another, this is more than mere recipes (although there are 100+ mouthwatering options to choose from). As a professional trained chef that happens to be most at home at the grill, you’ll also find expert cooking tips, a shopping list to properly outfit your grill, and 20 international menus that work whether you’ve got a charcoal or a gas BBQ.

Quirky Porter
Porter – $34.99 @ Quirky
Perhaps the only downfall of grilling is the fact you’re removed from a proper kitchen prep area, and juggling all those plates from the indoors to outside can be a handful. Luckily the Porter BBQ tray is here to save the day. This handy double decker tray has multiple containers so you can do all your kitchen prep indoors, separate raw meat from veggies, and even cover them till you’re ready to use them. The bottom layer has handles for easy carrying and provides additional storage space – plus it functions as a serving tray when your food is ready to eat. You can also attach a condiment caddy (not pictured) to stash paper towels and all the fixins’.

House of Q

House of Q BBQ Sauces & House Rub – $8.99 – $9.99
In writing this post, I knew I really wanted to find a Canadian BBQ sauce manufacturer to feature. I was lucky enough to partner with House of Q, a BC-based outfit that has some serious street cred: their Slow Smoke Gold BBQ Sauce & Slather recently earned second place at 33rd Annual American Royal World Series of BBQ competition – and if anyone knows their BBQ, it’s Kansas City, where the event is held. Of course, that’s not to discount House of Q’s entire line of lip-smacking, home-brewed BBQ accoutrements, which are available in over 300 stores across the nation or online. Perhaps most tellingly, House of Q is crafted by a husband-and-wife BBQ competition duo – so you know they’d only use premium ingredients and a perfect blend of spices to make your BBQ a five-star dining experience.

Meatball Griller Nordic WareNordic Ware Meatball Griller – $22.50
Before you give me a hard time, I’m aware that what you see above are stuffed lil’ cherry tomatoes and not meatballs, as per the product title. But therein lies the genius of Nordic Ware’s line of grilling accessories – you can use them whether you’re a vegetarian, a meat eater, or simply looking for a grilled side dish alternative (try halved mini bell peppers!) The rounded design works great with helping your meatballs keep their shape and easily drains fat, and throwing them on the Q will infuse your foodstuffs with a yummy smoky flavour. Score one for yourself from Caynes, Peavey in-store locations or through the Nordic Ware website (linked above).

Smoke by Tim ByresSmoke by Tim Byres – $40 (list)
On another smoky note, when we’re talking BBQ credo, cookbook author and restauranteur Tim Byres has plenty. As the chef and owner of the restaurants Smoke and Chicken Scratch deep in the heart of Texas (Dallas, to be specific), Byres’ brand new book Smoke provides BBQ fiends with new ways to get that irresistible smoky flavour through all kinds of methods and all types of food. When it’s gloomy outside, use Byres’ tome as a textbook on how to safely smoke your food on the stovetop using wood chips. Or if you’re serving up a spicy condiment like relish or or salsa, give it a savoury kick with smoked peppers or other veggies. For the diehards, there are even sections on building a fire pit, smokehouse or even spit roasting at home. The recipes skew toward the gourmand – cabrito and masa meat pies anyone? – but that’s not to say they’re inaccessible. In short, if dad’s looking to expand his BBQ horizons, this incredibly cool book is just the (yummy) ticket.

Quirky Grill WranglerGrill Wrangler – $37.99 @ Quirky
Cut down your BBQ arsenal with this 3-in-1 grilling tool made from stainless steel and sturdy plastic. Use the tongs for gripping & flipping of hot dogs and veggies, break out the vented spatula for flatter, heartier burgers and chicken breasts, and take the fork to task for spearing and serving up steaks and ribs. While it works wonders on the grill, you can actually also have it pull quadruple duty by bringing it indoors on rainy days to cut down on counter & drawer clutter.

So…I’m pretty sure this post unofficially wins an award for featuring the most droolworthy photos of food – seriously, a feast for the eyes right? If your tummy is rumbling and you’re eager to get out to the grill, hold up a moment: I don’t get to do this *too* often, but I’m psyched to tell you that Every. Single. All the items are great, but if I had to select only one (and this is difficult) it would be the Nordic Ware Meatball Griller.
